Student Annmarie tells us about her week undertaking work experience with us and all the exciting things she discovered!
My name is Annmarie I am 14 and on the 9th to the 13th of March I did my work experience at the Maritime Archeology Trust. I spent my week with Jasmine and Becca and they were extremely welcoming and incredible hosts.
I am still not 100% sure what I would like to do in the future but this work experience placement has helped me realise how incredible and fascinating maritime archaeology is. I have always been interested in marine life and even though I haven’t been studying marine animals being able to get the opportunity to look at and research shipwrecks and find out how the ocean preserves certain materials has been incredible.
I also have helped for preparation for a new museum by figuring out transportation services to it and documenting different items that will be discussed in the museum in a few years time.
On the week I was working I researched different shipwrecks and was amazed by how many items had been stored underneath the water. I was also shown leather that had been preserved for over 200 years by the sand. It still amazes me and I’ll tell anyone who will listen.
Working here for the week has also shown me how much research is important because it is a key thing for every job and sometimes it can even be quite exciting because of all the different information that is presented to you and you can learn so many incredible things!
I’ve had a great week at the trust and saw amazing things. I really enjoyed the time I was there and I learnt a lot more about shipwreck and artefacts that I wouldn’t on a daily basis. It has been super interesting and I hope to come back in a few years time.
