This worksheet primarily focuses on the practical activity of producing a coracle, but can also be used as a teaching tool when taking about technological developments through history.

By completing the activity and through the producing process of their coracle students learn more about ancient boats, their construction materials, and their evolution through time. The discussion can be further expanded to include a presentation on ancient means of transport in general.

They can learn about experimental archaeology and how this activity is similar to experiments conducted as part of experimental archaeology studies. The worksheet can be used as part of the Prehistory teaching. It can also be used to stimulate a discussion on how humans have used natural resources to produce artefacts in the past and the impact this had on the shaping of the landscape. Coracles can be used to teach students how it is possible to learn about past society through the study of their products and of what they left behind.
