Dr Nick Flemming

Nic Flemming led a diving team to map and conduct test excavations of the submerged Greek city of Apollonia, on the coast of Libya, in 1958 and 1959. In 1967 he discovered the submerged Neolithic- Bronze Age town of Pavlopetri in southern Greece. This was re-mapped and excavated with modern technology in 2009-2012 in a project led by the University of Nottingham. He led the snorkelling team to discover the submerged Neolithic occupation site of Agios Petros off the island of Kyra Panagia in the north Aegean in 1981. He led a diving project in 1982 to map the Ice-Age aborigine occupation of the north Australian continental shelf 30,000 years ago, and co-published the discovery of the oldest Palaeolithic tools found off the coast of South Africa in 2001. In recent years he has edited one of the final volumes from the European COST project SPLASHCOS, and published several papers on submerged Ice- Age prehistoric archaeology, as well as a research memoir entitled “Apollonia on my Mind.”
