My name is Rosie Murphy-white, I’m a 17-year-old college student and on the 9th and the 10th of July, I spent two days with Carley Divish doing work experience.
I currently study geology, biology and environmental science, I am very thankful for the opportunity as I have been able to do some very interesting things, that are relevant to my courses.
We started the day by looking around the centre and equipment, then I got to see the MATs storage,
There, I got to see some sediment cores and the cold storage where the cores are kept, after that we headed back to the office where I also got to see lots of samples up-close, from organics like shells and bones to worked rocks, and logged them for the database.
I was also able to do a Mini excavation through some sediments to search for wood, charcoal, rocks that may have been used as tools and anything else interesting, I then organised these into a database and logged all of them by location, ID number, size and what they were.
I also helped look for old photographs of Cornwall beaches in Bude to compare the landscapes for a project the MAT are working on, I managed to find some from 1871!
I even got to take some of my own photos of different samples of shells, charcoal, bones and sediment samples. I also measured the samples for the database.
I have really enjoyed my two days as I have learnt about what working in this type of industry is like, which has been super helpful for me as I wish to work in marine biology/oceanography in the future.
In only two days I have done so much, and all of it has been interesting and engaging. It has also linked well with my college courses which will help my knowledge in the subjects. I have done a great mix of computer work and more hands-on work as well.
I had a very productive two days and saw lots of interesting things. I really enjoyed my time, and I learnt a lot that will help me with my college courses and has been supper interesting as well.

Two artefacts found within the samples.
